Getting to know your jaw

Small joints.
A big part of your day.

Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull just in front of your ears. They work with surrounding muscles to help you chew, speak, and open your mouth.

TMD is the term for disorders affecting these joints and muscles. Often called “TMJ” in everyday conversation, these concerns can feel different from person to person. A professional evaluation helps you understand what may be behind your symptoms.

Sound familiar?

  • Jaw soreness or pain when chewing, speaking, or opening your mouth
  • Painful clicking or popping around the jaw joint
  • Jaw muscle tightness, stiffness, locking, or limited movement
  • Headaches, neck aches, or discomfort around the ears

These symptoms can have several causes. An exam helps determine whether a jaw joint or muscle concern may be involved.

Your path forward

A closer look.
A clearer next step.

Start with a conversation. Our team considers your concerns and helps you understand the options that make sense for you.

Share your story

Tell us where you feel discomfort, when it happens, and how it affects your day. Bring up clenching, grinding, previous jaw injuries, and any care you have already tried.

Look at the whole picture

We evaluate your teeth, bite, and jaw function. Ortho South also uses digital imaging to assess oral structures when clinically appropriate. Your doctor can explain whether additional imaging would be helpful.

Discuss your options

Review the findings and ask questions about next steps. Depending on your needs, that conversation may include conservative care, an oral appliance, or further evaluation by another dental or medical provider.

TMJ care is individual. Treatment often begins with simple, reversible approaches, and recommendations depend on the cause of your symptoms.

A nightguard is one type of oral appliance. The appliance pictured is an example; your recommendations will depend on your exam.

Thoughtful options. Personal guidance.

Could a nightguard
be part of your plan?

A professionally fitted nightguard can help protect teeth from damage caused by grinding. For people who clench or grind, an appliance may be one part of a broader care plan.

Ask our team whether an oral appliance is appropriate for your symptoms. A nightguard is not a cure for every jaw condition, and evidence that it improves TMD pain is limited.

Start with an evaluation. The right approach depends on your jaw, your symptoms, and your individual needs.

Before you book

A little clarity
for the journey.

Is the TMJ new-patient exam free?

No. The TMJ new-patient exam is $175. This specialized exam is separate from Ortho South's complimentary consultations for braces and clear aligners. Please mention TMJ concerns when requesting your appointment.

Does $175 include a nightguard or treatment?

The $175 fee is for the new-patient examination. Before scheduling, our team can clarify what is included and explain any separate fees for imaging, appliances, or treatment.

Does jaw clicking always need treatment?

Painless clicking or popping is common and often does not need treatment. Clicking with pain, jaw locking, or difficulty opening your mouth deserves a professional evaluation.

Will I need braces or clear aligners?

Not necessarily. Braces and aligners can address separate tooth-alignment and bite needs, but they are not a proven treatment for TMD itself. Your evaluation helps distinguish these concerns and guide a discussion of appropriate care.

Can TMJ concerns cause headaches or ear discomfort?

Jaw joint and muscle concerns can occur alongside headaches, neck aches, or ear symptoms. These symptoms also have other possible causes. Let your dental or medical provider know what you are experiencing so they can evaluate it appropriately.
