Quick Answer

Yes, you can usually use FSA and HSA funds for orthodontic treatment. The IRS counts braces as dental treatment, and the American Association of Orthodontists notes that clear aligners, retainers, and diagnostic visits generally qualify too. The big difference is timing. FSA money is often use-it-or-lose-it at the end of your plan year, while HSA money rolls over. If you still have FSA dollars this year, check your plan’s deadline and schedule a free consultation at Ortho South so those benefits can go toward a healthier smile.

Key Takeaways

  • Braces, Invisalign, Shift Aligners, and retainers generally count as qualified expenses when they treat a real orthodontic need. Teeth whitening does not.
  • Many FSAs are use-it-or-lose-it. Some plans add a grace period of up to two and a half months or a carryover of up to $680 from 2026, but never both.
  • HSA funds roll over every year, making an HSA a great way to save for treatment over time.
  • Open enrollment is your planning window. It’s when you choose next year’s FSA amount, so it pays to know your treatment plan first.
  • Ortho South offers free consultations in Pelham and Calera, plus monthly payment options, so your benefits and your budget can work together.

It’s early November. The leaves are turning, the holiday calendar is filling up, and somewhere in your inbox sits a friendly reminder from your benefits provider: you still have money in your flexible spending account (FSA). Sound familiar?

If you’ve been thinking about braces or clear aligners for yourself or your child, that reminder could be great news. Those pre-tax dollars may help you start a healthier smile this year.

At Ortho South, we love helping families sort this out every fall. Dr. Brandon Boggan earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) with honors from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and his Master of Science (MS) in Orthodontics from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, then opened Ortho South in 1999. Dr. Zehra Syed, our Dr. Z, is board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) and attended Oak Mountain High School, close to home. Together, our team wants to make sure none of your benefits go to waste.

In this guide, you’ll learn what your FSA or health savings account (HSA) can cover, how the deadlines work, and a few simple steps to make the most of your benefits before the year wraps up.

What Does FSA Cover for Orthodontics?

Let’s start with the good news. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) lists braces right next to fillings and X-rays as dental treatment in Publication 502, its guide to medical and dental expenses. FSAs and HSAs follow those same rules for what counts as a qualified medical expense.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) explains that, in most cases, these accounts can help pay for:

  • Consultations and diagnostic records
  • Braces
  • Clear aligners, including Invisalign and our own Shift Aligners
  • Retainers and follow-up care after treatment

You can usually use your account for your spouse and the children you claim as dependents, too. So yes, your teen’s braces can count.

What Doesn’t Count

The key word is treatment. The IRS does not allow these funds for teeth whitening, because whitening changes how teeth look rather than treating a dental problem. Straightening teeth and correcting a bite is different. It helps your teeth fit together, makes them easier to keep clean, and supports a healthy smile for years to come.

One more helpful detail: these accounts only cover the part of your bill that insurance doesn’t. If your dental benefits include orthodontic coverage, that coverage applies first, and your FSA or HSA can help with the rest.

HSA vs FSA: What’s the Difference for Your Smile?

Both accounts let you pay for care with money that isn’t taxed, so every dollar stretches a little further. The biggest difference is what happens to unused money at year-end.

FSA HSA
Where it comes from A benefit your employer offers An account you open with a bank or other trustee, often through work
Special health plan needed? No Yes, a high deductible health plan (HDHP)
2026 contribution limit Up to $3,400 per employee Up to $4,400 self-only or $8,750 family, plus $1,000 more at age 55 or older
Unused money at year-end Usually lost, unless your plan offers a grace period or carryover Rolls over and keeps growing
If you change jobs Tied to your employer’s plan Stays with you
Braces and aligners? Yes, for qualified treatment Yes, for qualified treatment

Some families have both. If you have an HSA, your employer may also offer a limited-purpose FSA, which you can use for dental and vision care. That pairing can be a nice way to set aside extra money for orthodontic treatment.

Why the End of the Year Matters for Your FSA Benefits

Here’s where timing really counts. The IRS describes most FSAs as use-it-or-lose-it plans, which means money left at the end of the plan year generally doesn’t come back to you.

Your employer may soften that rule in one of two ways:

  • A grace period of up to two and a half months after the plan year ends to use leftover funds
  • A carryover of up to $680 from a 2026 plan year into the next one

A plan can offer one of these, but not both, and some plans offer neither. Many plan years end on December 31, though not all do. A quick look at your benefits portal, or a call to your plan administrator, will tell you your exact deadline.

HSAs are more relaxed. Your balance rolls over every year, so there’s no year-end rush. You can also generally keep adding 2026 contributions until the tax filing deadline in April 2027.

Open Enrollment Is Your Planning Window

Fall is also when many employers hold open enrollment. That’s when you choose how much to set aside in your FSA for the coming plan year, and the IRS notes you usually can’t change that amount midyear unless the law and your plan allow it. If braces or aligners are on your family’s wish list, a consultation now gives you a clear treatment plan and estimate to build around. Give us a call! Our team is here to help guide you in this process and make it easy and smooth.

How Your Benefits Work With Braces Cost and Orthodontic Financing

Every smile is unique, so braces cost depends on things like how much your teeth need to move, the type of treatment you choose, and how long treatment lasts. Our post on the cost of a smile walks through those factors in more detail.

The great news is that your benefits don’t have to cover everything to make a real difference. Many families combine a few helpful tools:

  • Dental benefits that include orthodontic coverage, if your plan has them
  • FSA or HSA funds for the remaining balance
  • Orthodontic financing through monthly payment plans that spread the rest over time

At Ortho South, we offer several payment options, and we’re happy to offer Invisalign at the same cost as traditional braces. We’ll walk you through current payment plans at your consultation.

A Quick Note About Payment Timing

FSAs reimburse care as it happens, and the IRS says they can’t pay for future or projected expenses in advance. Because orthodontic treatment usually spans many months, plans handle it differently. Many reimburse each payment as you make it, while others require an upfront payment. Your plan administrator can tell you exactly how yours works, and our front desk team is glad to help with the treatment details your plan asks for.

Hang on to your receipts and payment statements, too. Both FSAs and HSAs may ask for them, and they make tax time a lot easier.

Braces, Invisalign, or Shift Aligners: Your Benefits Can Help With Each

Whichever option fits your smile best, it’s orthodontic treatment, so your benefits can generally help. Here’s a quick look at what we offer.

Braces

Braces are a dependable choice for kids, teens, and adults, and they shine for more complex bites. You can choose clear or metal, and kids love picking their colors. Curious why braces are still so trusted? Our post on why braces are the gold standard explains.

Invisalign

As Alabama’s Most Experienced Aligner Provider, we love helping teens and adults straighten their smiles with Invisalign. The clear aligners come out when you eat, so you can enjoy your favorite foods and brush and floss like normal.

Shift Aligners

Ortho South is the exclusive provider of Shift Aligners, a more affordable clear aligner option. Treatment typically takes three to five months with only a few office visits, which makes it a great fit for busy schedules.

Not sure which is right for you? That’s exactly what your free consultation is for. Dr. Boggan or Dr. Z will look at your teeth and bite, listen to your goals, and recommend the option that fits your smile and your budget.

And when treatment wraps up, retainers protect your beautiful results. They can qualify, too. Our guide to permanent vs. removable retainers shares how we help keep smiles straight for life.

Final Answer

Your FSA or HSA can be a smart way to pay for braces, Invisalign, or Shift Aligners with pre-tax dollars. The IRS treats braces as dental treatment, and aligners, retainers, and diagnostic visits generally qualify as well. If you have an FSA, check your plan’s year-end deadline and whether it offers a grace period or carryover, since unused money is often lost. If you have an HSA, your balance rolls over, so you can save for treatment over time. Either way, a free consultation at Ortho South is the best first step toward a plan that fits your smile and your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About Using FSA and HSA Funds for Orthodontics

Can I use my FSA for braces?

Yes, in most cases. The IRS includes braces in its list of dental treatments, so they generally count as a qualified FSA expense. Only the part of your bill that insurance doesn’t pay is eligible, and your plan may ask for paperwork showing the treatment and what you paid.

Are Invisalign and other clear aligners FSA and HSA eligible?

Generally, yes. Clear aligners treat the same alignment and bite concerns as braces, and the AAO notes that these accounts can be used for aligners. That includes Invisalign and Shift Aligners at Ortho South when they’re part of your orthodontic treatment.

What happens to my FSA money if I don’t use it by the deadline?

Most FSAs are use-it-or-lose-it, so leftover money is usually forfeited. Some plans offer a grace period of up to two and a half months, and others allow a carryover of up to $680 from 2026 into the next plan year. Check your plan to see which one applies to you.

Can I use my HSA for my child’s braces?

Usually, yes. HSA funds can generally pay qualified medical expenses for you, your spouse, and the dependents you claim on your tax return. The care just needs to happen after your HSA was opened.

Do I need dental insurance to use FSA or HSA funds for orthodontics?

No. These accounts work whether or not you have orthodontic coverage. If your dental benefits do include orthodontics, that coverage applies first, and your FSA or HSA can help with what’s left.
